What is Meesho RTO (Return to Origin)?

RTO happens when a customer cancels an order before delivery, refuses the parcel at door (Cash on Delivery / COD rejection), or fails to attend courier phone calls over 3 delivery attempts. The undelivered parcel is redirected back to the seller's pickup address.

Who pays for RTO in Meesho?
Meesho operates on 0% commission, but the courier reverse freight listed in this rate card is deducted from the seller's next payout settlement. Forward shipping is not charged separately on RTO.

Customer Return vs. RTO — What is the Difference?

Many sellers confuse Customer Returns with RTO. Understanding the distinction is crucial for accurate profit margins and tax filings:

RTO: Order was never accepted or opened by customer. Deducted as per this Reverse Rate Card. 100% GST on forward sale is reversed via credit note.
Customer Return: Customer accepted parcel, opened it, and raised a return within 7 days. Seller bears reverse courier shipping, and risk of opened/damaged goods.

Avoid the Volumetric Weight Trap

Courier partners (Shadowfax, Delhivery, Ekart, Xpressbees) scan box dimensions on automated sorting conveyors. If your box is unnecessarily bulky:

  • A 300-gram kurti in a loose, puffy 35×25×8 cm bag becomes 1,400g volumetric weight!
  • Your RTO fee jumps from ₹157 (Upto 500gm) to ₹218 (1001-1500gm), losing you ₹61 extra per return.
  • Use tamper-proof POD courier bags that adhere tightly to the product to avoid puffed air volume.

5 Strategies to Reduce RTO Rates

  • High Precision Size Chart: Incorrect sizing is the #1 reason for COD refusal in apparel. Always upload custom cm/inch charts.
  • True-to-Life Colors: Avoid heavy filters on product photography that cause "color mismatch" complaints upon door delivery.
  • Dispatch in Under 24 Hours: Orders shipped on day 1 have up to 28% lower RTO than orders delayed past SLA.
  • Buffer 10%–15% in Pricing: Use the Trendsly Profit Calculator to factor expected RTO loss into your selling price.
Frequently Asked Questions

Meesho RTO & Reverse Shipping FAQs

What happens to customer payment and GST when an order is marked RTO?

Since RTO orders are undelivered, the customer does not pay (for COD) or receives an automatic refund (for Prepaid). The forward sale GST collected by the government is reversed using a GST Credit Note issued by Meesho during month-end reconciliation. However, the reverse courier shipping fee (as per this rate card) remains payable by the seller.

What should I do if a courier partner overcharges my weight bucket?

If an item weighing 400g is billed under the "1001-1500gm" bucket, you can file a Weight Dispute Ticket in the Meesho Supplier Panel under Support > Payments & Deductions > Wrong Weight Discrepancy within 7 days of settlement. Provide package photos showing dead weight on a scale and box dimensions with a measuring tape.

How does this rate card integrate with the Trendsly Profit Calculator?

In the Meesho Profit & RTO Calculator, you enter your expected return rate (e.g. 12%) and return cost per unit. By clicking "Test in Calculator" on any row in this table, that exact reverse fee (e.g. ₹157 for ≤500g or ₹175 for 1kg) is loaded directly, giving you accurate breakeven prices and target net margins.

Is the RTO rate card identical across all logistics zones in India?

Yes, Meesho reverse shipping follows a standardized national flat rate card per weight bucket, unlike forward commercial courier networks that vary drastically across Intra-city, Regional, and Metro zones.
